This has been a very disorganized weekend.
It started out okay. I had vague plans of going to the Arab World Festival on Saturday, only to find out Friday night that it is actually next weekend. Saturday Grab-Bag
- I cannot get over how gorgeous Lake Michigan can be on a clear, sunny day.

Back at the beginning of summer, I tried planting a garden of succulents, flowers, and moss in the crevices of the retaining wall by the back door. The succulents hung in there, but pretty much everything else died. The soil around the plants' roots wasn't retaining enough water and I wasn't around to water them often enough. Back in the land of snow and ice once more
I've been reading Six Months in the Sandwich Islands by Isabella Bird Bishop and more than once she compares Hawaii to British Columbia. Now, eastern Washington state is a nice place in the summer, but I thought comparing that part of the world to Hawaii was a little ridiculous. I've since changed my mind.

Observations on winter work gear
Knit gloves + knit gloves + work gloves =/= warm.
But, knit gloves + knit gloves + Thinsulate-lined work gloves = warm.
Hiking socks + work boots =/= warm.
But, cotton socks + wool socks + Sorels = warm.I'm slowly refining my field work wardrobe. I spend so little time out in the field in the winter, though, it seems silly to invest much thought ( Read more... ) -
Socks!
Today I went bowling and scored 95 on our third game (I scored... somewhat less on the first two). This is quite possibly the highest bowling score I've ever gotten, which just shows you how lame I am at bowling. I almost forgot to bring socks. The weekend of crazy expenditures begins...
Even though the weather was still miserable, we pressed on with field work this morning. It was worth it, I think, as we got most of the rest of the big plowed field done and I found a point tip and a bifacially worked something-or-other, and then, on the way back to the van, found a little scraper in an area we'd already walked over.
